Sloppy, sloppy, sloppy

Well, my friends at the Fort Myers News-Press are at it again — allowing stupid, sloppy work to be published on their Web site, for all the world to see. Today’s contribution has no byline.

Lend a hand to some Capr Coral agencies

But, the shoddy writing doesn’t stop at the headline, unfortunately. This particular writer has not only made a typo in the head, they have also confused the abbreviated “et cetera” (etc.) with the abbreviated “incorporated” (Inc.). Other assorted punctuation flaws can also be found here.

The center needs financial assistance, spaghetti, spaghetti sauce, peanut butter and jelly, canned fruits and vegetables Inc.

Two thumbs up!! See it here.

Would you like some Franch fries with that?

Gaffe Number Two of the day — this one, courtesy of AFP. The story’s head reads:

Franch national pleads guilty to aiding art thieves

Although this is obviously a simple typo, the lack of proper editing — even on headlines — is well-illustrated by this error. See it here.

What do thieves do??

Just in case it's been corrected by the time you cruise there -- here it is!

Just in case it's been corrected by the time you cruise there -- here it is!

Good Lord — another priceless gem from the front lines of my local broadcast news stations, courtesy of a reporter identified as “Meaghan Smith,” with NBC-2.  The headline reads:

Thieves still candy, games from summer camp for kids

Where did these newshound matriculate from? A sad commentary on the state of education in this country. A fifth-grader should know better…

For the love of God and good grammar

Another day, another news story, another dozen typos — all in the same 3-inch story. I am about to go up in flames. I just can’t take it anymore.

Not only do reporters not seem to care, editors are obviously not doing their jobs, either. Take the following example from the Fort Myers News Press online:

Peggy Rohr, 39, was found sitting by her parked vehicle on Northeast 18th Street Wednesday, according to reports, and had alcohol on her breath. She was with two children, reports show.

She told officiers she had been fighting with her brother Danny, who fled the scene. Police caught up with Danny and arrested him on an outstanding warrnt, records show.

One of the minors was driving the car and said the mother was fighting with the minor and started pulling the minor’s hair, prompting the driver to pull over the car.

Officers wrote in reports that when Rohr was in a patrol car, she became combative, kicking the doors, and at one point, kicking an officer in the left kneww causing swelling.

This article appeared on Thursday, June 26, and despite a number of complaints about the atrocious writing — or attempt thereat — the article remains uncorrected.
